The history of Chhattisgarh dates back to very early times when it was known as South Kosala. The Aryan migrants to the South passed through it. It is a tribal -dominated territory situated between Orissa and Jharkhand in the East and Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra in the west. The population of the state is 17.6 million of which one third is tribal. The capital is of the state is Raipur. The state spans an area of 1,35,000 sq km and is divided in 16 districts. It has 5.88 million hectares of cultivable land and 6.07 million hectares of forest cover. The state has a mega steel plant at Bhilai and a few large cement factories. The major economic activities of the people of the state are agriculture, mining and forestry.
 
Places of Interest
Raipur - State Capital Founded by the Kalachuri King Ram Chandra of Ratanpur during the last quarter of the 14th century AD, Raipur is now the capital of the newly formed state of Chhattisgarh. Raipur is the biggest city in the region and a fast developing industrial center.

Dantewada is a beautifull district situated in southern bastar region of Chhatisgarh state . The district is blessed with Beautiful tall and long series of hills with full of thick green saal and teak forests. Rivers Indravati,Godavari & Shabhari flow through out the district.Two more periniel rivers Shankhini and Dankiny are also there.These rivers give many panoramic views and water falls at many sites in the district. Apart from the scenic beauty historical places like Barsoor, Bhadrakali and Dantewada are also worth visiting. Bailadila Iron ore project Township, mines, parks and Hill top habitations of Aakash nagar and Kailash nagar are places without viewing which the visit of Dantewada will not be complete.

Bodhghat Sath Dhar, 6 KMs from Barsur, river Indravati divides into 7 parts to form one small waterfall. This spot, fully covered with dense green forests stands to explain the beauty of the combination of the river, water and the mountains. With all its beauty and peaceful locality Sath Dhar is an idle picnic spot

Memory Pillars of Gamawada, 14 KMs from Dantewada, on the way to Bacheli one small village Gama Wada is located where large sized stone pillars invites the visitors to have a glance at the age old tradition of the local tribes. These giant sized stone pillars which were erected centuries back by the local inhabitants are basically the memory pillars dedicated to their diseased elders and relatives.
